Not quite reality TV
Ok, so I like to watch Law & Order as much as the next person - but tonights episode irked the hell out of me.
As a resident of Connecticut, I did appreciate the fact that they parodied the troubles that the Rowland administration faced, but I didn't like the "twist" that they decided to add - tying in the whole fiasco that New Jersey went through. It wasn't that I have an issue with the whole gay angle - or, as Governor McGreevey said, "gay-American" - it was that they decided to make it a "spousal confidence" issue, and therefore a gay marriage issue. But they were wrong - so very very wrong.
How? IANAL, but it seems to me that the whole reason for the spousal confidence rules/laws is to protect a husband or wife from being forced to testify against their wife or husband. In the case of a gay marriage, I guess that would be husband/wife against husband/wife - whatever.
But the crux of the case was that the spouse who was told the crucial information in confidence was WILLING TO TESTIFY. He knew that his lover did wrong, but wanted to tell the truth about it. While one part of the couple could argue it was in confidence, I don't see how it's a big deal if the other wants to testify - it then becomes no different than two person conversation, a "he said/he said" sort of thing. But that's just my opinion.
