Bush Greets Prayer Meeting, Faith Plan Gains Steam
By Randall Mikkelsen
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As his initiative to promote government support for religious charities gained momentum, President Bush (news - web sites) said on Thursday Americans' faith had helped them weather the shock of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Now let me make myself clear: I am an agnostic. But this crap...
about faith-based initiatives being funded by the government has got to stop. Our contry was founded by people who are now spinning quite rapidly in their graves.
Religion was clearly not meant to be part of our governing body. Our founding fathers were leaving their own countries to escape various religious persecutions. So with Bush preaching how great religion is, it's giving the wrong message. "Our country has never had an official faith. Yet, we have all been witnesses these past 21 weeks to the power of faith to see us through the hurt and loss that has come to our country." The faith that held the country together was faith in OURSELVES. In each other. Faith in the concept that created our country. Faith in the principles that have held our country together this long. Faith that our country will be around for many years to come.
By trying to imply that it was faith in anything but each other that held us together is almost as good as attacking the country itself. Our many enemies, including the Taliban/al Queda, proclaim that the US is "the great devil" and many other things. They themselves are attempting to use the power of faith in a religion to direct their minions to do harm to our country. Does this mean that Bush will eventually start directing our Armed Forces to attack to defend our faith? If it's to defend our freedom to choose a faith, then that's fine. If it's to defend our ability to believe in whatever faith the government tells us is right... then that's just wrong. We will have succumbed to the terrorists at that point. If we get embroiled in a Holy War, we will lose and lose badly.
